Illustrator Fun: Raven
From the ages of eight and oh…twenty-three, I was a painfully introverted daydreamer who always felt more at home in my own head than I ever did with real people. It was far more fun, and honestly much easier. It kinda still is.
Which explains my obsessive fascination with television, movies and comic books. Within the story twists of my favorite DC, Marvel and Elfquest issues, I created full-blown characters and plots that to this day, I can still recall and re-live word-for-word.
Folks might call this ‘detached from reality’. I would call it ‘detached from your reality. Which is way more boring. And annoying. And not nearly as pretty. So ppttththeh.’
In particular, I was a huge fan of Classic X-Men and the New Teen Titans. Recently, I rediscovered my sketch of a George Perez’ Origin cover for Raven – chosen likely because A) she was one of my favorite characters (besides Starfire and the Original Spider-Woman), and B) even more likely, because it was the easiest to attempt. I notice now I didn’t even bother trying to do her face, and simply focused on the shape and flow.

Love it – but I will note that I actually prefer it wihtout the face – it somehow makes her more menacing and scary.
